NEED A TOUR GUIDE?
Juliet C. Mateo 09294692138 / jmateo88@yahoo.com
Winzton Orpilla 09185040502 / belwin_08@yahoo.com

Here's a list of all authorized Banaue tour guides.

NOTE: The above are members only of the downtown Banaue tour guide association. Each barangay (zone, ward, neighborhood, barrio, etc.) of Banaue's municipality has it's own unique culture and can provide guides and information about their local area. For example, when going to Batad you don't need to hire a downtown Banaue guide (it's actually a bit unfair and unkind to do so!) to tour Batad when there are competent people in Batad who can help you. See our Batad page for more information regarding this.

SPECIAL PACKAGE DEALS AVAILABLE!
Hey! There's no need to drive or take the bus because these companies offer safe and complete package deals at reasonable prices. Using their services will make your Banaue trip a more enjoyable experience.

GOING TO SAGADA?
If you plan to visit Sagada as part of your Cordillera trip you might be interested in reading these helpful tips.

TRAVEL TO BANAUE BY AIR?
Air travel to Banaue is just not a viable option. The nearest commercial airport is Cauayan served by Cebu Pacific . But that still leaves you three hours by bus to Bagabag, then another three hours from there to Banaue. That, added to time expended in getting to the airport in Manila, waiting for your flight, flying (about an hour), you'll see that it'd just be easier and faster to do the entire journey by bus or auto.
MANILA'S AIRPORT
Manila's airport is on the south side of the Metro area while the highway to Banaue is on the north side of the Metro area. There is no crosstown expressway so expect delays; at 3 AM it might take you an hour by any form of transport while at 3 PM it might take two hours. All traffic will go on EDSA, a partial ring road (it's a street, not a highway) around the Metro area.

TERMINALS 1 and 2
T1 is served by most foreign carriers as well as Philippine Airlines (PAL) for their international flights. This is the terminal which has gotten the recent bad press as one of the world's worst . It's not as bad as the press would have us believe but it's true that it's not the most comfortable place to hang out. T2 is nearby and handles all of PAL's domestic flights.

GOING TO T1 AND T2:
Many buses on EDSA, marked either MIA (the old name for Manila International Airport) or NAIA (the new name, Ninoy Aquino International Airport) serve these terminals.
LEAVING T1 AND T2:
Those same buses can get you back to Metro Manila via EDSA. The buses pass every few minutes and there are stops just outside the terminals and across the road. The buses leaving T1 and T2 will say Cubao.

TERMINAL 3
Used by Cebu Pacific and Air Phil Express for both their domestic and international flights.
GOING TO T3:
The MIA/NAIA buses along EDSA do not go to T3. You can instead get a van or bus at the intersection of Taft and EDSA. At the southeast corner of that intersecton look for a SOGO hotel and a McDonald's next to a covered road. Walk about 20 meters south on that covered road and you will see the T3 vans and buses waiting to pick up passengers. Cost is 20 pesos.
LEAVING T3:
As you exit T3 cross the road and walk to your right and you'll see a bus stop where the buses wait to pick up passengers to take them back to Taft and EDSA. From that intersection you can easily catch a bus going the full length of EDSA or you can take either the northbound elevated train called LRT or the eastbound (well, sort of east, but it later swings northward because it follows the path of EDSA) elevated train called MRT.

TERMINAL 4 (also called Old Domestic)
Used only by Zest Airlines and Sea Air.
GOING TO T4:
Access to this terminal can be gotten by taking the above mentioned T3 van and then on arrival at T3, transfer (for another 20 pesos) to the shuttle that goes to T4, T2, and then T1.
LEAVING T4:
The only way into town from T4 is to go out the terminal and walk 300 meters north (to your right) to the gasoline station, cross the street and catch any jeepney that says MRT. Cost is only 8 pesos. No buses pass T4.

COMMENTS ABOUT TAXIS
Access to and from any terminal is of course available with taxis. Bear in mind however that Manila's taxi drivers are among the most shameless and exploitive on the planet. For more detailed information please read these cautions about taxis.

BUS SERVICE
Manila, night buses
While various companies offered night service on this route in the past, there is now only one, Ohayami. Their terminal is in the UST (University of Saint Thomas) area, also called Sampaloc, of Manila. It is at the corner of Lacson and Fajardo, 300 meters south of the intersection of Lacson and España. Their bus departs Manila 10PM daily and arrives in Banaue about 7AM. Departure from Banaue is 7PM daily and arrives in the Sampaloc terminal of Manila about 4AM. Fare is 450 pesos. They will allow you to make a phone reservation a day in advance but on the day of travel you must be early to buy your ticket or they will sell the seat to others who've arrived at the last minute. Reservation phone number is (02) 516 0501.

Manila, day buses
If you are a person who simply cannot sleep on buses or for other reasons prefers to travel in the daytime, it can be done. Florida offers day service with many departures to Bagabag Junction (Nueva Vizcaya province) from both their Sampaloc and Cubao terminals.Victory Liner does as well from their Kamias/Cubao terminal (note that Victory has two terminals in the Cubao area; you need the one at Kamias, opposite the GMA TV studios). Other bus companies , Baliwag, and others) in the Cubao area of Metro Manila have many departures daily to Tuguegarao in Cagayan province. Purchase fare to Bagabag Junction (Nueva Vizcaya province). At the junction there are frequent jeepneys to Banaue. All the buses that travel the Baguio-Banaue route (Ohayami and KMS Lines) pass through that point as well so you could wait for one, although they are not as frequent as jeepneys. Manila-Bagabag travel takes 6-7 hours. Bagabag-Banaue travel time is about 2 1/2 hours.

Angeles City, day buses
If you're in the Angeles City area (especially handy if you arrive in the Philippines via Clark instead of Manila) you can very easily take a Victory Liner bus from the Dau terminal with four departures daily beginning at 9AM (look for the bus saying Tuguegarao as the final destination). Buy a ticket only to Bagabag Junction and then at that intersection you can take the next available jeepney or bus to Banaue. If you take the first daily bus you should arrive at Bagabag by 4PM and Banaue by 7PM.

North Luzon
Many buses and jeepneys offer service between Baguio and Banaue, either via Sagada or Solano/Bagabag. Many others travel between Dagupan (Pangasinan province) and Bagabag junction.

NOTE: If you're new to bus travel in this country, we advise you to always carry a jacket or sweater. Filipino bus drivers really love to keep the aircon on its coldest setting!

RECENT NEWS ABOUT BANAUE

10 interesting places to visit in Southeast Asia
This summer, it's definitely "more fun" to travel and visit great tourist destinations both in and out of the Philippines. Here are some of the best places to see within Southeast Asia.

Incomparable Destination
The number of visitors the Philippines hit a record high, breaching the 400,000 level. That’s 17.5 percent higher than the 349,713 foreign tourists in the same month last year.

(click map to enlarge)
This map provided by the Banaue Tourism Office may be useful in finding your way around the region and reaching tourist attractions. Notice that Banaue town is the obvious hub for all tour activities in the region so staying downtown is your best option.

*TO THE WEST *

The town of Hungduan, about 17 km away is accessed by a rather rough road but the views are beautiful. Hungduan has a guesthouse and some interesting things to see, such as the Spiderweb Terraces, the Hot Springs, and the trailhead to go to Japanese General Yamashita's last hideout, a cave about a six hour trek up the mountain and rumored to have buried there millions of dollars in stolen cash, gold, and jewels.
*TO THE EAST*
Batad, Mayoyao, and Cambulo Village are the principal sites of interest in the area. Again, these are lovely but dead-end destinations and you must return to Banaue town to get transport out of the region. If you do plan on taking trek tours out of Banaue then this direction is clearly the place to go with Batad as your first destination. See our Batad page for more information.
* TO THE SOUTH *
Lagawe is the capital of Ifugao Province, just 25 km south of Banaue. Those with an interest in history might enjoy seeing the surrender site of Japanese Gen. Yamashita in Kiangan, the town west of Lagawe. Further south of Lagawe is access to the eastern highway that links Manila and Tuguegarao.
* TO THE NORTH *
Bontoc and Sagada with the famous hanging coffins are about three hours away from Banaue. But transport in that direction is best gotten early in the day, another reason to stay in downtown Banaue. Sagada might be included as part of a circle trip because transport is available from there to Baguio on the Halsema Highway, about an eight-hour journey.

The local government has published two informative and attractive brochures: brochure1 and brochure2. You can obtain them at the Tourist Information Center in Banaue but we also offer them here free as downloadable PDF files.

MONEY, NEWSPAPERS, AND INTERNET
There are no banks nor ATMs in Banaue (It really is a very small town!). The provincial capital, Lagawe, 25 km south of Banaue, has a branch of Philippine National Bank and an ATM. Its machine (yes, the only one in the town!) typically dispenses only a maximum of 4000 pesos for a single transaction. If you're paying a hefty service fee for each withdrawl from your foreign bank this could be very expensive. Solano, in the province of Nueva Viscaya, about 70 km away, has several banks and many ATMs. Those of BPI (Bank of the Philippine Islands) dispense 10000 pesos in a single transaction, BDO (Banco de Oro) 10000, RCBC 20000 pesos.

Foreign currency can be exchanged in Banaue but at very unfavorable rates.

National newspapers are available daily in Banaue but only after about 1 p.m. because of the distance from Manila.

There are some internet cafes in town. If you travel with a laptop you can also get online from most areas of the region by using a USB dongle available from either of the two major mobile service providers in the country, Smart and Globe . Cost is about P1000 for the modem and only 5 pesos for each 15 minutes of online access. If you travel with a tablet phone / computer you can purchase the SIM card for Smart or Globe for only about 60 pesos, and the charges are the same, only 5 pesos per 15 minutes of online access.

The Banaue rice terraces are located in the mountainous north central region of Luzon island on very good roads all the way from Manila to Banaue if you take the East Coast Highway. While Banaue is only 350 km from Manila, this drive takes about nine hours because it's a two-lane highway with many switchbacks in the mountains. Caution! Do not confuse this route with the Baguio route. The Central Cordillera mountains divide north Luzon Island; Baguio, Sagada, and Bontoc are on the west side of that mountain chain while Banaue is on the east side. If your primary destination is Banaue then you should take the eastern highway from Manila, via Cabanatuan. That's about a nine-hour trip.

A CIRCLE TRIP is possible if you wish to include other Cordillera destinations in your travel plans. Here are some estimated travel times (Depending of course on weather, form of transport, time of day, and road conditions):
Manila-Banaue: 9 hours
Banaue-Bontoc: 2 hours
Bontoc-Sagada: 1 hour
Sagada-Baguio: 8 hours
Baguio-Manila: 7 hours

WEATHER
The rainy season should be ending now so travel to the highlands may be more pleasant. Bear in mind however that the mountainous regions have some really unpredictable weather at times; while it may be sunny in one valley, it may be raining heavily on the other side of the mountain. You can check current weather conditions at Accu Weather or Meo Weather. The official Philippine government's website for weather is PAGASA but it rarely offers localized information and instead focuses on weather disturbances in the Asia Pacific region that may affect the entire nation.
FROM THE OPINION PAGES
Philippines Star columnist Ana Marie Pamintuan wrote "At 6 a.m. last Sunday in Banaue, a break in the dense fog revealed a mountain peak, soft morning light behind it. In the valley below, the fog lifted languorously, like a sensuous dance, revealing the terraced rice paddies built into the slopes." Read the article.
